Jaw Clenching and Neck Pain - Are They Connected?.

Jaw Clenching and Neck Pain

When we clench our jaw—whether from stress, focus, or habit—it creates tension that runs down through the neck and into the shoulders. The jaw (TMJ), neck, and shoulders share interconnected muscle chains. When tension builds in the jaw, it often transfers down into the neck and upper back, creating tension, discomfort and headaches.

Often we don't even realise we are doing it!

Common signs:

Frequent jaw clenching or teeth grinding (especially during stress or intense concentration)

Tightness at the base of the skull or across the shoulders

Posture collapsing forward (head and chin jutting out, rounded shoulders)

Some things to check-in with during the day that can help:

Become aware of your jaw throughout the day—teeth should rest slightly apart

Practice gentle posture resets: draw shoulders down and back, lengthen the spine

Take regular breaks to stretch and move

The human body as an incredible structure and it's amazing how things are interconnected - when one area holds tension, others often follow.

A facial massage is often what we will do when neck and shoulder tension is being addressed. Not only is it extremely relaxing but it helps relieve muscle and tissue tension.
